The rules of basketball are the governing formalities of the game. The rules regulate the official working, equipment and the procedures of playing the game of basketball. The international rules that are followed in the game of basketball are governed by international basketball federation’s technical commission. Most of the leagues present in the fray of basketball, which includes the national basketball association govern rules made by them.
Original rules:
The ball can be thrown in any direction with both the hands.
It can be hit with the bat in any direction.
The player has to throw the ball from the catching position.
The arms or any other part of the body is not allowed to hold the ball.
Holding, pushing, shouldering, striking or tripping the opponent is prohibited.
Striking the ball with the fist is not permitted.
Three consecutive fouls are considered goals for the opponent team.
If the ball that has been thrown or batted stays in the basket, then it is considered as a goal. If it goes over the backboard, it is officially considered as out of play.
The person touching the ball has to throw the ball back, if it goes out of bounds.
The judge of the players is the umpire, who notes the fouls and notifies the referee about three consecutive fouls made.
The referee has the power to judge matters concerning the position of the ball and the decision of the goal.
There are two fifteen minute half times with five minute breaks.
In case of a draw, five minutes of extra time is allotted.
International rules:
There are altogether eight rules consisting of covering equipment, facilities, players, coaches and captains, regulations regarding teams and playing conditions, fouls, penalties, and the table officials. The new rules were approved by FIBA on March 31, 2006.
