The international basketball federation is most commonly known in its French format as FIBA. FIBA stands for federation Internationale de basketball. The FIBA is an association comprising of national organizations that govern the international competitions of the game of basketball. It was initially called as federation Internationale de basketball amateur, but it dropped the word amateur in the year 1989 from its official name. The FIBA forms the rules for basketball, regarding the use of equipments and the facilities required. It also regulates the transferring process of the athletes across the countries. The appointment of referees is also done by it.
History:
The association was formed in the year 1932, in Geneva two years after the official recognition of the sport by the IOC. There were eight nations in the foundation committee, namely, Argentina, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Latvia, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and Romania. The federation named Mr. James Nesmith as its honorary president during the 1936 summer Olympics. FIBA is instrumental in the organization of the men’s world championship, since 1950 and the women’s championship, since 1953. Both the events are held after every four years, in alternation with the Olympics. The FIBA started Olympic participation such as the players from the NBA in the United States of America, in the year 1989. The headquarters of the federation was shifted to Munich, in the year 1956. It again returned to Geneva in the year 2002. The secretary general of FIBA is Mr. Patrick Baumann. The FIBA hall of fame was founded in the year 1991 with the first induction ceremony being held on 12th September, 2007, during Euro basket 2007.
The National Federation Manual:
The FIBA produces a national federation manual with the help of different basketball experts from the world. It has a detailed collection of information about the sport. This helps in assisting the different national federations on their daily operations.
